Preventing a Government Shutdown – Latinos and All Americans Can’t Afford a Government Shutdown

government shutdown

Keeping our government open and operating effectively is a fundamental responsibility of Congress and the White House. Unfortunately, a highly contentious partisan fight over federal spending is creating a strong possibility of a government shutdown that will negatively impact the American people.

During a shutdown, most non-essential agencies stop operations and furlough employees. Those that are deemed essential continue to work, but without pay for the duration of the lapse in appropriations. Essential workers include military personnel, border protection, law enforcement agents, air traffic controllers and CDC staff.

Civilian contractors whose services are impacted by the shutdown also lose wages. Unlike federal employees, they do not receive back pay when the government reopens. This has a destabilizing effect on the contracting workforce and erodes the confidence that businesses have in Congress.

Latinos and all Americans cannot afford the political brinkmanship of those in Washington who prioritize ideological battles over our communities’ safety, security and economic well-being. Government shutdowns harm our community, disrupt the economy, and waste taxpayer dollars. Instead of lurching from one crisis to the next, lawmakers must adopt practical solutions like the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act that extend funding, keep Congress in session, and ensure a more transparent bottom-up appropriations process. This bill would help prevent future government shutdowns and allow our federal agencies to deliver on their core missions. It is long past time that we put an end to this dangerous game of chicken.
