World News for Journalists

World news is the media jargon term for international news, news about a foreign country or a global subject. For journalism, this is a major area of specialization (although news about war may also be considered national for the media of belligerent countries). The bulk of most large news agency services is composed of world news.

A foreign correspondent is a reporter based in a city, region or country (or sometimes an entire continent) that regularly files stories to the news editor of his or her employer’s publication. He or she typically gathers information for his or her stories by interviewing government officials, members of the community, and witnesses to events. Correspondents often work for several different newspapers or news agencies simultaneously and are sometimes known as stringers. This is in contrast to a staff reporter, who works full time for a single newspaper. Likewise, an assignment writer is a freelance journalist who works for multiple news organizations on a regular basis. This is in contrast to a general assignment reporter, who travels to a particular location and covers various subjects as the need arises.
